5 Minutes with Pete Cromer

5 Minutes with Pete Cromer

Maxwell & Williams has collaborated with Australian artist Pete Cromer this season, to create a unique series of coasters and mugs.

Based in Torquay on Victoria’s Surf Coast, Pete is renowned for his signature use of colour and collage techniques. Each piece in the Pete Cromer collection is based on an original artwork, featuring an Australian animal created in his very own contemporary style.

We recently sat down with a cup of tea and a delicious passionfruit sponge cake to ask Pete a few questions...

How did you become a full-time artist?

I’ve always had a passion for making and creating, but I really didn’t think I’d be able to make a career out of it. So I worked in the corporate design world for years, and as much as I enjoyed my work, art was always in the back of my mind. When the niggle to do my own thing became too strong to ignore I decided to give it a crack full time! I’m so happy I did.

How did you come to develop your unique technique?

My art is what comes naturally to me and what I gravitate towards. When I have an idea, I experiment with all types of mediums – paint, collage, sculpture – and break it down into simple forms until my vision comes to life.

What keeps luring you back to brighter colours?

It’s more fun! I love mixing bright colours together because it makes me happy. My favourite colour is blue.

What about the Maxwell & Williams collaboration are you most excited about?

I’m thrilled to be working with such an iconic Australian brand, but what I’m really excited about is having guests over offering them a tea or coffee in one of the mugs featuring my artwork!

What hot drink keeps you going on cold studio days?

I’ve recently given up coffee, so my new go-to drink is a special turmeric tea blend that combines turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, honey and lemon.
